Chapter 14

Logan

“Logan, I need to see you. Now!” Coach barks.

I block a puck Tripp shot at me, and then skate over to where Coach Carl is waiting by our bench. His arms are folded across his chest, and he has one of his standard angry faces that you can never tell if it’s his usual grumpy self or if he’s pissed.

“What’s up?” I ask, as I skate over to him.

“I liked the images from your charity event,” he says gruffly. “I want you to keep up that appearance.”

I nod, afraid to speak in case he’s about to lay down a hammer on me.

“We leave next week for the Vegas tournament, and I need you to be on your A-game. Sponsors and some of our big donors will be in attendance. This is your chance to shine and help us win a championship.” Coach Carl stares at me and I gulp down my nervousness.

It’s been a week since I met with those kids and a week since I last saw Ashlynn. I hate how hot and cold she can be. She’s managed to avoid me at the arena and dodges me when we see one another on campus. Everyone loved the images from my day with the kids and I have another day set up with them tomorrow evening.

“I’m ready, Coach. I’m not partying, and I’ve been putting in extra time on the ice,” I tell him, feeling pride in myself for the first time in a long time.

“I need you to head up to the offices and meet with Ashlynn and Sawyer. I swear, I thought having my daughter come to Sunnyvale would be a disaster, but she’s surprised me,” he admits.

I’m shocked by his statement. “Are you two close?” I ask, though I already know the answer to that question. I don’t think I’ve seen Ashlynn and Coach Carl say more than a few words to one another. They feel more like acquaintances than father and daughter, and that thought makes me sad. Ashlynn is incredible, and I want Coach Carl to know it.

“No. She’s had a rough couple of years. I hoped that being here would be good for her, though I’m sure the first chance she gets, she will run off back to her mom and her wild life in Miami.” He grunts and rubs the stubble along his jaw. “Anyway, get up to the offices and find out about your schedule tomorrow.”

He walks back over to the other coaches and leaves me alone. Is Ashlynn going to leave Sunnyvale soon? I haven’t even had a chance to get to know her and now I’m worried she’s going to leave. With that, I stalk over to the elevators and push the buttons hard. Once I get to the PR floor, I move rapidly toward Sawyer’s office. However, my steps falter as I pass Ashlynn’s door.

Bent over in a short, jean skirt, she’s looking at something on her desk. Her long hair was pulled back in a messy bun, strands falling across her face as she leaned forward in contemplation.
